Districts / TORRENS
Robert Richard Torrens MA (1814-1884) migrated to Adelaide from Ireland in 1839. He was at various times Collector of Customs, Legislative Councillor (1851), Treasurer, and Premier (one month in 1857). and was appointed as the first Registrar General. He introduced the Real Property Act (the Torrens-title system of land registration) that was adopted by other colonies and eventually many countries throughout the world.
Area:approx. 19.8km2
Location: Located to the north-east of the City of Adelaide, it is a largely residential district bounded by the River Torrens in the south and includes Hope Valley Reservoir. The 1998 redistribution made some alteration to the boundaries of this district.
History: The district "Torrens" was first created 1901, effective 1902, until 1915. It was revived in 1936, effective at the 1938 elections through to 1985 and revived again in 1991 effective at the 1993 elections. Members since 1938 have been:
