History

This district was created at the 1998 boundaries redistribution and first represented in 2002. The district was previously named Spence.

Name origin: Croydon the village was laid out in 1855 and comprised Croydon Farm of 40 acres, the remainder being subdivided into five acres lots. It is said to have come from a French word 'craye' (chalk) and the Saxon word 'dun' (hill) - a town near a chalk hill.

Size: Approximately 17.3 km²

Location: Situated to the north-west of the City of Adelaide and bounded in the south by the River Torrens / Karrawirra Parri. Croydon is largely inner suburban residential with some light industry.

Key boundary changes compared to 2010: Croydon gains the suburb of Woodville Gardens, part of the suburb of Ferryden Park, and the remainder of the suburb of Kilkenny. It loses the remainder of the suburb of Findon.
