Area
Approximately 6,435.2 km2
Localities
Frome includes the city of Port Pirie and its regional council, the Clare and Gilbert Valleys Council, and portions of the Northern Areas Council and Wakefield Regional Council.
History
The seat of Frome has had three incarnations in the history of South Australia’s House of Assembly. First represented in 1884 as a seat in the far north, its first incarnation ceased to exist in 1902. Frome was revived between 1938 and 1977, based around the area north of Port Pirie. The district name of Frome was once again revived at the 1991 redistribution but with boundaries somewhat different to its previous incarnation. It has been contested and represented continuously since 1993.
Origin of the name
The district is named after Captain EC Frome (1802-1890) who arrived in the Province in September 1839 and was appointed by Governor Gawler to the Executive Council. Frome was the third Surveyor-General after Light and Sturt and made a notable contribution to the development of the colony, including early surveys of the South Flinders Ranges near Pt. Pirie.
Key boundary changes compared to 2014
Frome gains a portion of Wakefield Regional Council incorporating the localities of Erith, Hoskin Corner, Owen and Stockyard Creek, as well as portions of the localities of Barabba, Grace Plains and Hamley Bridge. Frome loses a different portion of the Wakefield Regional Council, incorporating the localities of Barunga Gap, Bumbunga, Hope Gap, Lochiel and Snowtown, as well as portions of the localities of Bute, Mundoora and Wokurna. It also loses all of the portion of the District Council of Barunga West that it previously covered. It additionally loses a portion of the Northern Areas Council incorporating the localities of Beetaloo Valley and Laura, and portions of the localities of Georgetown, Gladstone, Huddleston and West Bundaleer.
